We’re Living in a War - The militarization of Rio’s war on crime.

In February, just after carnival, Brazil's federal government took control of Rio de Janeiro's security. Brazil's President Michele Temer issued the decree to combat what he said was a grave collapse in public order.

Since then most indicators of criminality have not shown a decrease in the amount of violence in the city. Security forces on the other hand have killed 150 percent more people when compared with 2017.

The majority of significant operations by the government target powerful drug trafficking organizations in the city's favelas. Caught in the middle of the two sides are innocents civilians that live their lives in the shadows of the war.
